The Freyr tactical axe is a remarkable blend of Norse design and American craftsmanship. Designed by Elmer Roush, a veteran with a deep appreciation for traditional axe shapes, the Freyr axe pays homage to the tried and true designs that have been used for over a thousand years. Inspired by Viking style, the deep beard of the axe adds a touch of history, while its balance and strength catapult it into a league of its own. The axe, named after the Norse god of prosperity, possesses a Viking soul that is evident in its classic appearance.

Crafted in Brasstown, North Carolina, the Freyr axe is a modern workhorse that embodies the spirit of its historical inspiration. Although its deep beard may not be used for drawing back an enemy’s shield as it would have been in ancient Viking battles, it adds balance and elevates this axe to a contemporary tool suitable for a variety of uses. The blade is hot forged from 1055 carbon steel and treated for ultimate corrosion resistance, while the handle is crafted from Tennessee hickory for durability and ease of use. In 2013, Ryan Johnson of RMJ Tactical recognized the therapeutic benefits of designing and forging steel tools for combat veterans returning from war with post-traumatic stress (PTS). This led to the creation of the Forged By War program in 2016, which partners with CRKT to design mission-ready tools crafted by veterans.
